Dalam percakapan sehari-hari sering kali kita mengungkapkan kelebihsukaan terhadap hal-hal seperti benda, orang, tempat, aktivitas, dll. Hal ini biasanya diungkapkan dengan kalimat “Saya lebih suka memakai sandal daripada sepatu”. Dalam bahasa inggris kalimat tersebut biasa disebut sebagai Expressing Preference.
Expressing Preference biasanya diungkapkan dengan kata ‘lebih suka’, yang menunjukkan tingkatan kelebihsukaan terhadap suatu hal dibandingkan dengan hal lainnya.
Berikut beberapa bentuk kalimat beserta contohnya yang digunakan dalam mengungkapkan preference.
- Like … better than …
Subject + like + noun/-ing form + better than + npun/-ing form
Contoh :
- I like milk better than coffee
- He likes reading better than writing
- I know you like vanilla ice cream better than chocolate ice cream
2. Prefer … to/rather than …
Subject + prefer + noun/-ing form + to + noun/-ing form
Subject + prefer + to infinitive+ rather than + bare infinitive
Contoh :
- We prefer watermelon to orange
- She prefers doing her homework in the library to doing it at home
- I prefer to work with a computer rather than use a mobile phone
3. Would rather … than …
Subject + would rather + bare infinitive + than + bare infinitive
Contoh :
- I would rather go to school than stay at home
- I would rather talk in person than call him on the phone
4. Would prefer … rather than …
Subject + would prefer + noun/to infinitive + rather than + noun/to infinitive
Contoh :
- I would prefer a juice now rather than milkshake
- I would prefer to read a book rather than watch TV
