Pengertian Hortatory Exposition
Hortatory exposition terdiri dari dua kata yakni hortatory yakni merupakan suatu kata sifat atau adjective yang mempunyai arti kecendrungan atau bertujuan mendesak orang lain untuk melakukan sesuatu. Sedangkan untuk exposition memiliki makna berupa sebuah penjelasan dan penjabaran dari suatu teori secara komprehensif.
Sehingga dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa hortatory exposition merupakan sebuah teks yang menjelaskan teori ataupun masalah secara komprehensif dengan tujuan mempengaruhi pembaca. Hortatory exposition termasuk ke dalam argumentation text yang di dalamnya terdapat pendapat penulis mengenai hal tertentu dalam memperkuat ide pokok dari suatu teks.
Hortatory exposition sangat popular di kalangan akademika dan banyak ditemukan pada buku-buku ilmiah, jurnal, artikel koran, pidato akademis, dan lain sebagainya.
Sekilas hortatory exposition mirip dengan analytical exposition, namun pada hortatory exposition harus menyertakan rekomendasi pada bagian akhir atau paragraf penutupnya. Tidak hanya itu saja, penulis juga harus mempengaruhi pembaca dengan cara seperti seharusnya demikian ataupun tidak seharusnya demikian.
Ciri-Ciri Hortatory Exposition
Adapun ciri-ciri dari hortatory exposition antara lain:
- Menggunakan simple present tense.
- Teks persuasif yang disertai oleh alasan-alasan yang mendukung.
- Menggunakan temporal conectives, seperti firstly, secondly, etc.
- Menggunakan evaluative words, seperti valuably, importantly, etc.
- Berisikan rekomendasi yang diawali oleh in my opinion, for these reasons, dan lainnya.
Struktur Hortatory Exposition
Hortatory exposition tersusun atas tiga bagian, antara lain:
Thesis
Thesis merupakan bagian pertama pada hortatory exposition yang berisi tentang pengenalan ide pokok mengenai kejadian atau peristiwa yang ingin disampaikan oleh penulis. Thesis juga dikenal dengan general statement.
Arguments
Arguments merupakan bagian yang berisi tentang berbagai pendapat guna mendukung ide pokok penulis. Semakian banyak pendapat yang ditulis, maka semakin menarik pula hortatory exposition untuk dibaca.
Para pembaca semakin yakin terhadap suatu peristiwa apabila di dalamnya berisi banyak pendapat yang mendukung. Ditambah jika pendapat yang dimasukkan berasal dari para ahli sehingga para pembaca akan semakin percaya dan hortatory exposition juga menjadi semakin menarik.
Recommendations
Recommendations adalah bagian akhir pada hortatory exposition. Di bagian ini berisi mengenai rekomendasi ataupun ajakan penulis untuk para pembaca mengenai topik yang dibahas pada teks.

English nowadays has an important role in our daily life. It is the massive means of communication. Is there a strong argument which says that English will not give any benefit?
Arguments
Learning to speak English well may be the best way to improve our life. It seems all the people in the world have agreed to use English to talk to each other. About 1,500,000,000 people in the world speak English. While another 1,000,000,000 are still learning English.
If we can communicate in English, we can contact people from all over the world. We can talk about our ideas and opinions on Internet discussion groups. We can chat with other interesting people to learn about their life and culture.
If we can communicate in English, we can travel more easily. English is spoken in more than 100 countries. If we lost, we can ask directions or ask for help. Who knows, English will save our life somewhere someday.
That is why we should make every effort possible to find somebody to speak with. Where can we find people who can speak English with us? We can find them at school, shopping mall, tourist destination, etc
Recommendation
Above all, don’t be afraid to speak English. We must try to speak, even if we make mistakes. We can not learn without mistakes. So, speak English as much as possible!

Why You Should Not Smoke
Thesis
I am sure that you know that smoking harms your body. Then why do you continue smoking? Maybe you do it because you haven’t really become conscious about all the effects that smoking has. There are a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t smoke. Some of them are that smoking affects your health, that you spend a lot of money on cigarettes, and that when you smoke you are not respecting people around you.
Arguments
The first reason why you shouldn’t smoke is that smoking affects your health. If you smoke, your physical condition will be negatively affected, so it will be very difficult for you to succeed in sports. Also, smoking produces lethal diseases like cancer and reduces the length and quality of your life. Maybe you don’t notice all the physical effects of smoking immediately, but you surely will be sorry one day.
The second reason why you shouldn’t smoke is because of all the money that you spend on it. Maybe you start smoking only when someone offers you a cigarette, but there will be a day when you will feel the need of a cigarette. By this time, you will pay whatever to smoke, and each time you will smoke more, so you will spend more money. All the money you would spend on cigars could have be spent in something better, don’t you think?
The last reason why you shouldn’t smoke is out of respect for the people around you. When you smoke, you not only harm yourself, but you also harm all the people around you. So you mustn’t be selfish; you should at least avoid smoking in front of people who don’t smoke. Also, many people don’t like the cigarette’s smell, so they won’t enjoy your company. Would you like that?
Recommendation
I have said just some reasons of why you shouldn’t smoke, so I hope that now those of you who smoke are able to think a little and try to make a smart decision. In addition to all the reasons I’ve said, I would like you to think about how much you love yourself and then whether you want to continue harming yourself. Think also about all the people who love you, like your family who doesn’t want to see you suffering or sick. If you decide to continue smoking, what a pity.
